8 Mansions (八宅派)
 
This is considered one of the most popular sects or methods that people have been practising today. It is straightforward and simple to learn. However, there exist many contradictions in its theory and practical applications.

Basically, this method divides the house into 2 Groups; one as West Group; the other one as East Group.

West Group: Qian, Kun, Gen, Dui (NW, SW, SE, W) (乾、坤、艮、兑)
East Group: Kan, Li, Chen, Xun (N, S, E, SE) (坎、离、震、巽)

One of the core emphases of the theory is to match the individual's Gua number with the house's Gua number. Hence, it is necessary to work out the "life Gua" (命卦) of a person prior to the selection of the group which the type of house belongs to.

The door position determines the group that the house belongs to, derives the sitting position and works out the 4 good and bad locations. These locations are derived from House Gua by changing the Yin Yang of the "Yao". They are namely

Upon comprehending the attribution of each sector, one can plan, allocate or utilize the favourable sector via various ways such as positioning aquariums, plants, sofa, beds, stoves, study tables and among others, according to the auspiciousness of the sector. Else, avoid utilizing the unfavourable sectors for important positions.
 
Generally, people often mix up 8 Mansions (八宅) with Yang Chai San Yao (阳宅三要). Although both of them share similarities in many ways in terms of terminology and derivation, they are different in many major areas. It could be summarized as follows:

1. Based on sitting position to derive Fu Wei Based on door as Fu Wei looking inwards
2. Emphasize on personal "life Gua" Emphasize on internal arrangement of door, master bedroom, stove
